1957 GMC AMBULANCE

You are looking at a 1957 GMC Ambulance, originally built for the Los Angeles City Fire Department as part of a program that ushered in the era of "Rescue Ambulances". It was one of 6 such vehicles that went into service in 1957.

The vehicles served their tour of duty, and were then sold off. Today, this is one of two known to still exist.

It is believed to have been built by a small West Coast company called Yankee, that built custom fire apparatus at the time (no relation to the present-day Yankee company on the East Coast, which also builds fire apparatus). Originally it would have been powered by a 347 cubic inch Pontiac V8 coupled to a GM Hydramatic transmission.
